SESSION 2 – PIGMENT, ADDITIVE & MATERIAL TRENDS: ENHANCEMENTS DRIVING NEW OPPORTUNITY called Organoleptic ultramarine blues – a story of an innovation that performs
Organoleptic ultramarine blues Abstract:
Utramarine Blue pigments have been broadly used for years in the plastics industry to make color concentrates and compounds for food and cosmetics packaging because of its unique, distinctive blue shade and excellent processing and service life performance. Plastic caps and closures have historically been the most important segment for Ultramarine Blues. As this pigment is a sulfur derivative, the potential issue of sulfurous odor and/or taste due to the chemical nature of the product has always been a critical factor in this type of very sensitive applications.
A few years ago the increasing end consumer’s sensitivity to organoleptics and the growing importance of safety and regulations compliance for key brand owners led Ferro to develop an innovative organoleptic Ultramarine Blue series (named Nubiperf FCP) to provide the maximum “insurance” in this regard. Since then, the penetration of such products in the plastic caps and closures market and the number of success stories have proven the added value of that technology and its progressive acceptance by the most organoleptics and safety sensitive industry players.
This paper revisits:
1. The challenges we faced to develop that technology,
2. The highlights of the extensive research carried out in combination with independent, specialized research centers,
3. The success of that series, and
4. The way forward for that innovation to continue developing added value color solutions for the industry.
